Best Hard Drive Test & Diagnostic Tools to Check Hard Disk's Health • Repair Windows™

If your hard disk’s health is not in a good state, then you may lose your important data in the future. For that reason, you must frequently take a backup of your valuable data to another storage device or media (e.g. on a USB disk, DVD, etc.) and from time to time to check your hard disk for possible damages, by using a hard disk diagnostic utility.

Today all hard drives have embedded a monitoring technology called S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology), that can continuously monitor hard drive’s health by monitoring several parameters on the disk, like the read and write errors, the temperature, spin up time, etc.

In this tutorial you can find instructions on how you can check the health status of any storage device (HDD, SDD, USB, etc.) by reading S.M.A.R.T. and how to scan the hard disk surface for possible damages.

How to read S.M.A.R.T and Test your Hard Drive for problems. (HDD, SSD, USB)

    – To read the important information that S.M.A.R.T. provides and to diagnose your hard disk for problems, you need a Hard Drive Health Monitoring and Diagnostic Program. To accomplish this task you can use one of the following FREE HDD diagnostic utilities that works with all hard drives: *

    1. CrystalDiskinfo
    2. HD Tune

    * Note: If you know the manufacturer of your hard drive then you can use the corresponding HDD diagnostic utility:

    1. CrystalDiskInfo

The CrystalDiskInfo, is a hard drive diagnostic utility, than can inform you for the health condition of your hard drive, by reading the S.M.A.R.T. information. To view your Hard Disk’s health state with CrystalDiskInfo:

    1. Download and install CrystalDiskInfo application.

    2. Launch CrystalDiskInfo. *

    * Note: If you have more than one disk on your system, click Disk from the main menu and choose the disk that you want to find out its health status.

    A. If your hard drive is healthy, then you should see under Health Status: Good.

    B. If your hard drive is not healthy then you should see under Health Status: Caution *

Note: If hard disk’s health status, is not in a good condition, this means that you must give additional attention to your drive and your data. At this case perform the following actions:

    1. Backup your data to another storage media/device.2. Perform a surface scan to the drive by using HD Tune (see below) to find out the extend of damage.

    2. HD Tune.

The HD Tune is an excellent hard disk diagnostic utility that can read the S.M.A.R.T. analysis and to perform a surface scan on any internal or external hard drive. HD tune comes in two versions the Free and the PRO one. The main disadvantage of the Free version, is that cannot read the S.M.A.R.T. information from external USB hard drives. A detailed comparison between the two versions of HD Tune can be found on HD TUNE official download page. *

    – To test your hard drive for problems with HD Tune: *

    * Note: You can either download the Free or the Trial version. (For this tutorial I use the HD TUNE Trial Version)

    1. Download and install HD Tune on your computer.

    2. After installation, launch HD Tune application. If you have more than one disk installed on your computer, then use the drop down arrow menu to select the hard disk that you want to check for hardware problems.

    3. Choose the Health tab to to read the S.M.A.R.T. information and health status of the HDD.

    A. If your hard drive is healthy, then you should see at the bottom of HD Tune window: Health status: OK *

    B. If your hard drive is not healthy, then you should see at the bottom of HD Tune window: Health status: Warning *

Note: If hard disk’s health status, is not in a good condition, this means that you must give additional attention to your drive and your data. At this case, perform the following actions:

    1. Backup your data to another storage media.2. Proceed to the next step to scan hard drive’s surface for damages.

    4. To perform a surface scan on the hard disk, choose the Error Scan tab and then click the Start button.

    5. Let the HD Tune to complete the surface scan. If all squares becomes Green then your hard disk’s surface is in a good condition. If you see at least one RED square, then your hard drive is seriously damaged and you have to replace it as soon as possible, to avoid loosing your files.

    Hard Disk Drive Tests

Running tests on your hard drive can be useful in determining the health of the device and its propensity to failure. Slow operation or frustratingly long response times can be an indication of media degradation and bad data sectors.

    Bad Sector Issues:- 0871 231 6806

    What are Bad Sectors?

Hard drives consist of several circular platters that use magnetism to store the bits of data. Each platter is then divided into tracks, which run in a circular pattern around each platter. Each track is broken into many smaller pieces called sectors. To reduce overhead, sectors are grouped together in clusters.bad sector occurs when there is physical damage to a part of the hard drive. Modern hard drives are created with many spare sectors. When the disk controllers firmware in the hard drive detects a bad sector, it remaps that sector to another physical sector on the hard drive. This remapping is transparent to the operating system. Once the hard drive runs out of space sectors, meaning it cant remap existing bad sectors, the operating system will begin to detect these bad sectors. Once detected, the operating system will mark these sectors to prevent them from being used in the future.

As the hard drive accumulates more bad sectors, you may begin to lose data, have your system crash more frequently, or have your entire system become very slow and unresponsive. This means that you should be backing up your data and replacing your hard drive.

    Test Utils.

Manufacturers and O/S providers along side others have available some useful test applications that will put your hard disk drive through its fitness paces:-

    Hitachi Drive Fitness Test.

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test is free hard drive diagnostic software available for use on most drives available today.

The Hitachi Drive Fitness Test software is available as an ISO file which can be burned to a CD and then used to boot the computer. See the installation instructions from Hitachi in the link below for details.

Note: You do not need to own a Hitachi hard drive to use Drive Fitness Test (DFT).

    HGST Align Tool.

Most modern operating systems have been designed to work efficiently with Advanced Format drives. For optimum performance, it is important to ensure that the drive is partitioned correctly and that data is written in 4K blocks by both the operating system, and the application. Modern operating systems handle this automatically. When using Advanced Format drives in legacy environments, special tools may be required to optimize read/write performance and keep the data sectors aligned. Users who have created a misaligned partition may download the Windows utility below to correct this condition by re-aligning the partition.

    Microsoft Windows Built-In Error Checking.

Error Checking, sometimes referred to as scandisk, is a hard drive testing tool that comes with Microsoft Windows that can scan your hard drive in search of a wide range of errors.

This tool can also attempt to correct a number of hard drive problems.

    Samsung HUTIL.

Samsung HUTIL is a free hard drive diagnostic utility for Samsung hard drives. HUTIL is sometimes called ES-Tool.

Samsung's HUTIL tool is available as an ISO image for burning to a CD. This makes HUTIL operating system independent and a better testing tool, in general, than those designed for use within Windows. It's also possible to run HUTIL from a bootable floppy disk.

Note: HUTIL will only test Samsung hard drives. HUTIL will load and find your non-Samsung drive you will not be able to run any diagnostics on the drive.

    Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic.

Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic is free hard drive testing software designed for Western Digital branded hard drives only.

The Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic software is available in a bootable, ISO format and allows for a number of hard drive tests. See the installation instructions from Western Digital in the link below for details.

Note: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic will also run diagnostics on hard drives from other manufacturers but the primary drive in the computer must be a Western Digital drive.

    Bart's Stuff Test.

Bart's Stuff Test is a free, Windows-based hard drive stress test. There are not a lot of options in Bart's Stuff Test and it's not as thorough as some other tests on this list. However, it's a decent addition to your hard drive testing arsenal, especially if you're having problems testing with an ISO based tool above but want something besides Window's default tool.

Bst5 uses the free space on the disk, and if you dont stop it, it will use almost all available disk space. So better be careful if you run a hard drive stress test on a virtual disk that grows dynamically. However, you can configure how much free space Bst5 will leave. If you are afraid that the disk space that contains data is corrupt, Bst5 wont be of much help.

It makes sense to use Bst5 before you install a new OS on an old disk just to ensure that the hard drive still works reliably. After you format the disk, you can boot Windows PE and launch Bst5 from there.

BST5 is also helpful if you want to quickly find out how fast a hard drive is since the tool measures the minimum, maximum and average speed for read and write operations. I tested Bst5 5.1.4 on Vista, Windows 7 and Windows PE 3.0.

The commercial edition of Bst5 also supports stress testing on the device levels, without involving the file system. This also allows you to stress test other storage media such as tapes.

    Seagate SeaTools.

Seagate SeaTools is free hard drive testing software that comes in two forms for home users:

SeaTools for DOS supports Seagate or Maxtor drives and runs independent from your operating system on its own CD or disk, making it highly reliable.

SeaTools for Windows is a program that installs on your Windows system. You can do basic and advanced testing of any kind of drive - internal or external - from any manufacturer. For those looking for SeaTools Desktop, SeaTools Online, or Maxtor's PowerMax software, please note that the two tools above have replaced all three. Seagate now owns the Maxtor brand.

Note: You do not need to own a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive to use SeaTools.

It displays read and write speeds of hard drive in MB/s and I/O/s. there are various parameters that can be set in command to get test result accordingly.

You can set the size of test file, block size, time to run sequence, i/o threads, target disk, etc.

Few good command examples have been provided on the home page of this software, and it rendered disk read and write speeds for my PC pretty easily. I used the following command: Diskspd.exe -b256K -d10 -o8 -t4 -a0,1 #9

All you need to do is, open Command Prompt and navigate to the folder where this tool has been downloaded. Now run the command to get the read and write speed of hard drive right in front of you.

You will also find command help in a user manual, that downloads with the exe file of this software.

14 best HDD health check software for PC users

Your PC’s hard disk stores all of your relevant data, and any potential damage to the device has the potential of endangering your data, as well, unfortunately. On the other hand, a hard disk has a limited lifespan, and it will eventually get corrupted sooner or later. Therefore, letting your data depend on it is not the best option we recommend.

If you are not aware of the condition of your hard drives, you may not be able to save your essential data before it’s too late. You have to become conscious of the fact that not all hard drive crashes are random and this is why you have to know when it’s time to back up your data before it fails beyond return.

You really have to make sure that all your essential information is backed up before anything nasty might happen to your hard disk. A recommended solution is keeping tabs on your hard drive’s health so, in case something goes wrong, you will quickly be able to back things up.

Solutions & alternatives for monitoring your hard drives

Here are your solutions and alternatives for keeping an eye on your HDD’s health:

All last-gen drives come with a monitoring technology called S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology). This tool is targeted at continuously monitoring a certain number of parameters on a hard drive. Various parameters can be efficiently monitored using S.M.A.R.T., and these also include read and write error rates, spin-up time, seek error rates, temperature, and more important elements.

To actually warn you when some of these crucial parameters are degrading or reaching their threshold you need a program that can track down all of these changes and that will also show them to you.

You must get the opportunity to test and see whether your hard drive is capable of safely storing your data, to have enough time to backup essential files and to start looking for a replacement in case it becomes necessary due to various reasons.

A monitoring program alone may be not fully capable of showing you whether the integrity of your files can be preserved on a particular hard drive. It’s an excellent idea to scan for unreadable or bad block of data with available tools at least once a month to make sure that your drive is not degrading and your data is not being lost.

S.M.A.R.T. for checking your HDD’s health

S.M.A.R.T. is the embedded monitoring system that comes implemented in most modern HDD or SSD, but unfortunately, it will only let itself be known to users only when an imminent hardware failure is on its way. All the main HDD manufacturers recommend an occasional check of your disk status and also running some surface tests and benchmarks.

We gathered a list of 14 tools for checking your HDD’s health, as well, as they can best predict and protect from the unavoidable circumstances of hard drive failure. Anyway, most of the utilities usually incorporate the built-in S.M.A.R.T. feature mentioned above, and it will definitely help them offer more information regarding indicators of disk reliability.

How to Test and Diagnose Hard Drive (HDD) for hardware problems - wintips.org

One of the biggest problems that occur in our computer lives is to lose our critical data because of hard drive damages or failures. The best way to avoid this, is to maintain copies of your important files in more than one storage device (for example two different hard drives) and keep them offline. The second action that we can perform to protect ourselves from disk damages is to diagnose our hard drives for hardware errors.

For that scope, on latest technology hard disk drives, the HDD manufacturers includes an information program about HDD health, named S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology). The S.M.A.R.T. works continuously on the background and monitors a number of hard disk parameters like 'power on' hours, temperature,  reallocated sector count, write error rate and much more. In this tutorial we suggest five different programs, to read the S.M.A.R.T. status on your hard drive in order to diagnose hard drive's health.

How to test and diagnose your hard drive (HDD) for hardware errors.

In this article, we suggest five (5) free disk diagnostic utilities to see the health status of  your hard drive.

    1. HD Tune2. Acronis Drive Monitor (ADM)3. Crystal Disk Info4. Speed Fan5. Sea Tools

    1. HD Tune – Free version

HD Tune is my favorite disk health tool utility and can be used to read  the health status S.M.A.R.T. of your hard drive and to perform error surface scan. Unfortunately, the free version doesn't support external hard drives and isn't updated anymore.

The latest free version of HD Tune utility is V2.55 and you can download and install it from here.

    How to use HD Tune:

    a. Run “HD Tune” and first select the hard disk you want to diagnose (if you have more than one).

    b. Then choose the “Health” tab to view HDD’s health using S.M.A.R.T. analysis. Check the “Status” column if all values are reported as “OK”. If no, then you must pay attention to your hard disk and replace it.

    c. After viewing S.M.A.R.T. press the “Error Scan” tab to perform error scan in disk surface.

    2. Acronis Drive Monitor (ADM)

ADM is another great tool from Acronis* that always runs on the background and alerts you for disk problems and errors (by reading S.M.A.R.T. information) in real time. The program works both with internal or external hard disks and has the ability to alert you when a problem is detected with alert messages or email.

You can download Acronis Drive Monitor from here after you complete the registration form.

    * Suggestion: If you 're looking for a reliable backup program, then try Acronis True Image.

How to use Acronis Drive Monitor:

    1. After installing ADM, choose the disk from your available disks in the left column.

    2. In “Status” column, check if all values are reported as “OK”. If no, then you must pay attention to your hard disk and replace it.

    3. Modify alert settings by choosing “Critical events” in the left pane.

    3. Crystal Disk Info

The Crystal Disk Info utility is able to read the health status of your hard drive using HDD S.M.A.R.T feature and monitors the temperature, power on hours, spin retries, etc. You can download and install “Crystal Disk Info” from here.

The program can read the HDD S.M.A.R.T. and has the option to alert you on the health of your hard drive (internal or external) with emails or sounds.

    4. SpeedFan

SpeedFan is another free HDD diagnostic tool that can check the status of your hard disk using S.M.A.R.T. You can download and install “SpeedFan” from here.

    5. Sea Tools for Windows

Sea Tools for Windows (from Seagate hdd manufacturer) can test SATA, USB, 1394, ATA (PATA/IDE) or SCSI drives. The utility works with every hard drive brand e.g. Western Digital, Fujitsu, Hitachi, etc. and can check your hard disk's health using S.M.A.R.T. technology and also can perform surface tests on your disk to diagnose it for problems..

You can download “Sea Tools” for Windows from here in the download section.
