Adblock Plus for Firefox is the most downloaded browser extension worldwide and winner of the About.com Reader's Choice Award in 2011 and 2013, as well as the Linux New Media award for the Best Open Source Firefox Extension.

Adblock Plus for Internet Explorer

Developing extensions for Internet Explorer is challenging; that’s one of the reasons there aren’t as many extensions on Internet Explorer as on Firefox, Chrome or Opera. Installing Adblock Plus for Internet Explorer is a little different than on other browsers. Usually, the extension is directly added to the browser; however, for Internet Explorer you need to install it through a so-called setup program. But don’t worry - it takes under 30 seconds to install. Click the Install for Internet Explorer button above and start browsing in peace.

Please note: Due to the limitations of some of the fragmented versions of Internet Explorer, Adblock Plus currently doesn’t work:

Adblock Plus for Opera

Are you tired of annoying ads wreaking havoc on your browsing experience? Used on over 100 million devices, Adblock Plus for Opera is one of the most popular add-ons available.

Add Adblock Plus to your Opera browser by clicking the Install for Opera button above, or by visiting Opera add-ons directly.

Adblock Plus for Opera works great. Don't believe us? Don't just take our word for it. Here is what the popular download portal Softpedia has to say: "Adblock Plus for Opera is a very useful add-on that was especially designed to help users get rid of nuisances like pop-up ads, flashing banners and other such things."

Adblock Plus for Safari

With the release of Adblock Plus for Safari in January 2014, the Adblock Plus browser family became complete.

Adblock Plus for Safari uses the same codebase as the Chrome and Opera versions. Although this made the development of the ad blocker much more complex, there are certain key advantages. For instance, because it shares the same codebase, any changes or improvements made to one of these browsers will automatically land in Safari, ensuring an experience that is always up-to-date.

In contrast to Chrome and Firefox, Safari comes with a few innate limitations. Because these are built into the browser, they affect every add-on available for Safari - and ours is of course no exception. These limitations exist because it is not possible to get "deep" access to the Safari code like we can with other browsers. Bottom line: there are some facets of Adblock Plus for Safari that cannot function optimally. For example, it is not possible to block ads in "third-party plugins" like video players or to block the so-called XHR requests. Usually this would mean that YouTube video ads cannot be blocked. But because of some very smart workarounds, Adblock Plus can block these annoying video ads in your Safari browser.

Adblock Plus is supported by Safari 6.0 and higher.

Adblock Plus for Yandex.Browser

Adblock Plus is the most advanced ad blocker for Yandex.Browser. Are you fed up with advertisers infringing on your browsing experience? Simply install the extension and all annoying ads like blinking banners, pop-ups, video commercials on YouTube, Facebook ads and Vkontakte ads will be blocked. Want more? You can easily activate additional privacy and security features such as tracking and malware protection.

Installing Adblock Plus for Yandex.Browser only takes a few seconds. Simply click the Install for Yandex.Browser button above and confirm the installation by clicking the Add button. Please note: Yandex.Browser displays a warning that Adblock Plus can access the data on any website you visit. This is a standard warning for Yandex.Browser extensions running on every tab. We promise to never collect any data about you.

Adblock Plus is developed by the open source community and free to use. Used on more than 100 million devices, it’s one of the most popular extensions ever.

Adblock» + «Adguard».

Браузерное расширение Adblock

What is Adblock Plus?

Adblock Plus is a free extension that allows you to - among other things - block annoying ads, disable tracking and block domains known to spread malware. Available for Android, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Maxthon, Opera, Safari and Yandex, Adblock Plus uses filters that you choose to block all unwanted elements.

Created by Wladimir Palant in 2006, Adblock Plus is an open source project licensed under GPLv3. In 2011, Palant, together with Till Faida, founded Eyeo to make its development sustainable.

How does Adblock Plus work?

Adblock Plus itself has no functionality; it doesn't block anything until you "tell" it what to block by adding external filter lists. Filter lists are essentially an extensive set of rules that tell Adblock Plus which elements of a website to block. You can add any filter list you want. For example, you can block tracking and/or malware (technically, Adblock Plus under default settings already has some level of tracking and malware protection but you can enable more protection). You can also create your own filter lists. Almost all filters are open source, therefore many filter lists have been created by Internet users.

Filter lists enabled by default include:

  • An ad blocking list selected based on your language (EasyList)
  • The Acceptable Ads list

These are enabled to get you started. You can remove them or add others - it's up to you.

EasyList corresponds to your browser language and is aimed at disabling ads that are considered to be intrusive by our community of users. Please note, Eyeo GmbH did not draft EasyList and therefore has no right to, or control over, its content. Visit the EasyList Community for more information.

The Acceptable Ads list displays ads that comply with the acceptable ads criteria agreed upon by our community of users. The list is maintained by Eyeo GmbH.

What are Acceptable Ads?

We don't think all ads are bad and are fully aware that ads finance many websites. So, in 2009 we decided to find some common ground. Our solution involved asking Adblock Plus users, and our community at large, to help identify criteria that makes for better ads. From these discussions, we established strict criteria to identify nonintrusive ads. In 2011, we began implementing the Acceptable Ads initiative. Participants that wish to comply with the Acceptable Ads initiative can apply to be added to the Acceptable Ads list. Participating in the Acceptable Ads initiative is usually free of charge for participants. Only larger entities, which gain more than 10 million additional ad impressions through their participation, are required to pay a monthly fee (for more information, please read about how we are financed). Adblock Plus users have the option to display ads that are on the Acceptable Ads list or to disable the Acceptable Ads feature and browse completely ad-free. To view the list of acceptable ads, visit the Acceptable Ads Proposals forum.

Please see the Acceptable Ads FAQ to learn more.

How we are financed

We receive some donations from our users, but our main source of revenue comes as part of the Acceptable Ads initiative. As detailed below, larger entities pay a licensing fee for the whitelisting services requested and provided to them (around 90 percent of the licences are granted for free, to smaller entities). It should be noted that all ads must first abide by the Acceptable Ads criteria, regardless of whether the entity serving them would be required to pay or not. If the criteria are not met, whitelisting is impossible.

Here are some details regarding the fees:

  • Only large entities have to pay. We qualify an entity as large when it gains more than 10 million additional ad impressions per month due to participation in the Acceptable Ads initiative.
  • For these entities, our licensing fee normally represents 30 percent of the additional revenue created by whitelisting its acceptable ads.

Managing the Acceptable Ads initiative requires significant effort on our side including, but not limited to, ongoing review and monitoring of the individual whitelisted ads, counseling participants and technical support. These services cannot be completely taken over by volunteers nor be sponsored through donations, as may be the case with commonly used filter lists.

Therefore, a few very large entities who take part in the Acceptable Ads initiative compensate Eyeo for its services. Eyeo's services are provided free of charge to all other participants (roughly 90%).

Important: Every entity on the whitelist - paying participant or non-paying participant - MUST maintain the same strict criteria that our users accepted as part of the Acceptable Ads initiative. We will never accept any ad that doesn't meet these criteria. There is no way to buy a spot on the Acceptable Ads exception list. All whitelisted ads and participating entities are publicly listed on our forum. Feel free to discuss and share your opinions.

Why do we need money?

Eyeo GmbH, the company behind Adblock Plus, was founded to pursue a different vision of online advertising. This is not something a single person can do as a hobby.

In fact, we have a small but growing team that supports our users and the increasing amount of participants who choose to partake in the Acceptable Ads initiative.

Our goals are simple:

  • Continue to work on Adblock Plus so that it can function on various platforms
  • Keep improving the functionalities of Adblock Plus to provide users with the best possible tool to protect them from malware and have better control of their browsing experience and collection of their personal data

In regards to the Acceptable Ads initiative, Eyeo needs to review and analyze many applications. This includes reviewing ad format, safety precautions, compliance with the Acceptable Ads criteria and technical feasibility of the requested whitelisting, creating the filters for the whitelist, testing the filters, posting to the forum, etc.

But, Eyeo is not just about Adblock Plus and Acceptable Ads. Our mission is to make the Internet better. We intend to do so by creating new ways for publishers to earn money from their content without alienating their users.

Does Adblock Plus collect any user data?

We do not specifically collect any user data. Most of your data (e.g. what websites you visit) is never sent to our servers to begin with. Please see our Privacy Policy for details.

Adblock Plus Features

Each Adblock Plus feature functions because of a filter list. You can use pre-made filter lists or create your own.

By default, EasyList, which corresponds to your browser's language setting, and the Acceptable Ads list are enabled to get you started. You can remove them or add others - it's up to you.

Important: Eyeo GmbH, the company behind Adblock Plus, did not draft EasyList and, therefore, has no right to, or control over, its content. Visit the EasyList Community for more information. In no case will Eyeo be held liable towards you or any other party for any loss or damage (including, but not limited to, loss of chances and of business) deriving directly or indirectly from your use of such lists.

Block Ads

Adblock Plus blocks all annoying ads on the web by default, including video ads on YouTube, Facebook ads, flashy banners, pop-ups, pop-unders and much more. This is possible based on the filter list(s) you've selected. Simply install Adblock Plus and, if you'd like, customize it to fit your unique browsing needs.

Allow Acceptable Ads

Since many websites rely on advertising revenue, Adblock Plus's default settings encourage the use of nonintrusive advertising rather than annoying, irrelevant ads. To accomplish this, we've established a set of strict guidelines known as the Acceptable Ads initiative. Together with our users and third-party contributors, we have defined acceptable ads and outlined appropriate ad placement and size. Ads meeting these criteria are visible. You can, however, disable this feature at any time and browse ad-free.

Disable Tracking

With every browsing session, there are multiple firms tracking your online activity and browsing history. Hundreds of ad agencies are tracking your every move. With Adblock Plus, you can easily disable most tracking and browse the web more anonymously.

According to Stanford University research, the EasyPrivacy tracking protection filters are the most efficient of all available tracking protection solutions, and can extend the tracking protection of Adblock Plus.

To enable this feature, open this dialogue and click Add.

Disable Malware Domains

If your computer is slow at startup or riddled with pop-ups, it may be infected with malware. Computers infected with malware are vulnerable to all types of cyber attacks, including stolen identity. Infected computers can also be used to send spam emails or attack other computers or servers, stealing passwords, social security numbers, personal documents and credit card information.

By default, Adblock Plus provides some malware protection, but it can extend this protection by being configured to also block domains known to spread malware. This helps protect your computer against viruses, Trojan horses, worms, adware and spyware.

To enable this feature, open this dialogue and click Add.

Disable Social Media Buttons

Buttons used to share content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and others are placed on almost every website that you visit. Even if you don't click them, these buttons send requests to the social network's servers which then uses the information to create a profile based on your browsing habits.

Adblock Plus can disable social media buttons from websites, ensuring that social networks cannot create a profile based on the websites you visit.

To enable this feature, open this dialogue and click Add.

Getting started with Adblock Plus

What is Adblock Plus?

Adblock Plus is the most popular browser extension available for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and Android. Its primary purpose is to remove all intrusive advertisements from your browsing experience: YouTube video ads, Facebook ads, banners, pop-ups, pop-unders, background ads etc.

How does Adblock Plus work?

In order to block ads, Adblock Plus requires the so-called filters to "tell" it which requests to block. Out of the box, Adblock Plus comes without any filters, but, it will offer you to add a filter subscription on first start. With these filters enabled, it can block specific requests from websites, usually the requests to serve an ad. Blocked ads often leave blank spaces or "Advertising Tags" on webpages. Adblock Plus is still able to remove these with a functionality called "element-hiding": based on certain specific characteristics, Adblock Plus is able to hide certain elements from the webpage.

Installing Adblock Plus

For Firefox

If you use the Mozilla Firefox browser, click the install button on the Firefox installation page. Firefox will prompt you to allow Adblock Plus to install the add-on: Click on "Allow".

  • Open "Settings" and go to "Unknown sources" option (under "Applications" or "Security" depending on your device)
  • Tap the checkbox and confirm the upcoming message with "OK"

In order to download Adblock Plus for Android, access the Android installation page, download the app and open it.

Once Adblock Plus has been installed, enabled and configured, all ads should be blocked.

First steps

Choosing the right filterlist

As previously described, Adblock Plus requires filterlists to block ads. By itself, Adblock Plus can only see the webpage you are loading, but has to be "told" by the filterlist which elements to block. When you install Adblock Plus for the first time, it will automatically suggest a filterlist to you based on the language settings of your browser.

There are a two basic lists out there, EasyList and Fanboy's List. These two lists block the ads from the most popular (often English) websites. However, these lists do not block ads on less popular national websites. In the case that you, for example, come from Germany, you will have to subscribe to the national German filter list. In this case, this will be "EasyList Germany + EasyList". An overview of all the lists can be found here.

It is important to note that you should not add too many filterlists to Adblock Plus. This will slow down the adblocker, therefore, your browsing. As a rule of thumb, it is highly recommended to not use overlapping filterlists (e.g. choose either EasyList OR Fanboy's List).

You can also use filterlists to protect yourself against tracking, malware, social media tracking etc. Read more about this here.

If you want to remove a filterlist again check out this tutorial.

(you can undo that choice in the same way by unchecking this menu line).

  1. Navigate to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications (on devices running Android 4.x, Settings > Apps).
  2. Scroll through the list of apps to find the one you'd like to uninstall.
  3. Tap on the app you'd like to uninstall.
  4. Tap "Uninstall".

Solving problems

What if Adblock Plus blocks too much?

It might happen that Adblock Plus prevents some site from functioning correctly. Usually, this is not a bug in Adblock Plus but a problem with the filters (or filter subscription) you are using, these filters tell Adblock Plus to block something that shouldn't be blocked. You verify this by temporarily disabling Adblock Plus, if this "fixes" the problem you are dealing with a bad filter. Please report bad filters by using "Report issue on this webpage" feature that will automatically collect important data of the current web page:

When asked about issue type, please choose "Adblock Plus is blocking too much":

Your report will be automatically sent to the maintainers of the filter list that you use. Please have understanding that filter maintainers don't reply to or act upon each of the many reports they receive. Your report will be more likely to be considered if you provide additional information to make the problem more obvious and reproducible.

What if Adblock Plus doesn't block an advertisement?

If you found an advertisement that Adblock Plus doesn't block, please check first whether you are using the right filter subscription. For example, expecting a French filter subscription to block advertisements on a Bulgarian website is unrealistic — you should add a Bulgarian filter subscription for that job. If the filter subscription is right, then the subscription maintainer is probably simply unaware of the problem and you should tell him by using "Report issue on this webpage" feature that will automatically collect important data of the current web page:

When asked about issue type, please choose "Adblock Plus doesn't block an advertisement":

Your report will be automatically sent to the maintainers of the filter list that you use. Please have understanding that filter maintainers don't reply to or act upon each of the many reports they receive. Your report will be more likely to be considered if you provide additional information to make the problem more obvious and reproducible.
